The challenge

Henry Boot, a prominent UK-based real estate, property investment and construction company with a rich history spanning 138 years, embarked on an ambitious project to create both a printed and digital ‘year-in-review’ hybrid report for 2023. This initiative occurred during a significant rebranding phase, with the annual report serving as a bridge between the old and new corporate identities. The theme “Our future, our legacy” aimed to communicate Henry Boot’s exciting future prospects while honouring their successful past. The primary challenge was to effectively communicate the impending rebrand while maintaining the integrity of their historical values. The report needed to signal the core themes and messaging of the new brand without fully revealing it, as the rebrand was to be announced a few months later.

Our approach

To address this challenge, the theme “Our future, our legacy” was chosen to emphasise Henry Boot’s promising future while linking to their storied past. The report showcases their premium portfolio of high-quality projects in prime locations, underscored by exemplary sustainability credentials. Key strategic implementations included integrated storytelling, market focus and a comprehensive business overview. The “Group at a glance” section provides an overview of business divisions and revenue streams, emphasising both cyclical and recurring revenues. The ‘Investment case’ is presented upfront, outlining key strengths for investors. Detailed sections such as the Chairman’s statement, CEO update and business review provides performance insights, while the marketplace analysis contextualises their strategy with macroeconomic trends. The design uses iconography and strong imagery to link old and new brand identities and enhance navigation.

The outcome

The 2023 annual report was extremely well-received, meeting the objective of transitioning Henry Boot into their new brand identity. Stakeholders appreciated the clear and comprehensive communication of the company’s strategy, performance and future prospects. The report effectively balances the legacy of Henry Boot with the promise of their future, paving the way for the successful launch of the new brand. Innovative approaches such as digital delivery, integrated sustainability narratives and extensive use of infographics and iconography makes complex information accessible and engaging. The design highlights Henry Boot’s people-centric culture, aligning with the new brand’s values. Overall, the strategic use of design elements and digital delivery ensures that the report is both informative and engaging, solidifying Henry Boot’s position as a forward-thinking leader in its industry.
